Advanced Learner Program

Reach For the Stars

Alpine County Unified School District and Diamond Valley Elementary School are proud to announce that this year’s Advanced Learner (formerly GATE) Program theme is Astronomy as we help our 3rd through 8th grade students “Reach for the Stars.” We have a number of events planned this year that will immerse our students in STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) activities. Some of these activities include guest amateur astronomers, computer programming, and an introduction to robotics. We are also planning for a capstone type event near the end of the school year.

As robotics are becoming an ever more important component of space exploration, we at Diamond Valley Elementary School have decided to help students become leaders in this field. Students will receive hands on experiences on how technology is developed and how computers are programmed. We will be utilizing a computer language curriculum developed by Carnegie Mellon University and Oracle Corporation over the first semester in the After School Education and Safety Program (ASES). During the second semester, students will use the tools and skills they learned during the first semester and apply them towards an understanding of robotics.
